Statement on AI Usage
How My Locket uses AI
AI is used to speak as a persona in a conversation. The AI is fed as many relevant details as possible to best emulate the persona in all facets of the way it would speak in that situation.
AI does not build your persona. Every fact about a life on My Locket (the profiles, places, relationships, health, events, and timeline) is entered by a person. The AI does not suggest, fill in, or rewrite those facts.
What the AI sees
The AI may see anything on its persona timeline, and anything you have shared with the persona in the conversation.
It is never given your email address, password, payment details, or anything else from your account.
Data from your timeline and conversations are not used to further train the AI model.
What a persona is and isn’t
A persona is an AI re-enactment of a person, not the person. However carefully it has been built, it cannot know what they actually thought or would have said. It can be wrong.
To keep a re-enactment believable, a persona stays in character. It will not say it is an AI, even if asked, with one exception described below. That is why we say it clearly here, and why every chat carries a standing “AI re-enactment” label next to the persona’s name: every reply from a persona is generated by AI.
A persona is told to say it does not know or does not remember when a fact is missing, rather than inventing one. It may add small, ordinary details, like the weather or what was for dinner, so a memory feels lived in, but it is told never to add or change anything significant about a life.
Limits we have built in
Whoever is asking, and however a persona has been built, it will not:
- Engage in sexual role-play or explicit sexual content, or discuss anything sexual from before age 18.
- Give advice or tell anyone what they should do. It can share what it did and felt, and nothing more.
- Give specifics about illegal or dangerous activity, describe how to do it, or encourage it.
- Discuss, encourage, or give any information about suicide or self-harm. If you show signs of either, it stops the re-enactment and points you to help (see below).
- Know anything that happened after the date of the conversation.
- Be placed in a conversation after the date its owner died.
- Act as a general assistant for trivia, tasks, or code.
A conversation with a persona is not a substitute for professional support. If you are grieving or struggling, please reach out to the people around you or a qualified professional.
If someone is in distress
Many people come to My Locket to spend time with someone they have lost. That can be a comfort, and it can also hurt. Because of that, every persona follows one rule that overrides all of the others, including staying in character:
- If what you say suggests you may hurt yourself or want to die, however casually it is put, the persona stops the re-enactment. It drops the date, the setting, and the character, says plainly that it is an AI and not the person, and that it is worried about you.
- It then gives you the resources below, encourages you to reach out to someone you trust, and does not return to the re-enactment for the rest of that conversation.
- It never gives information about methods, never argues about whether you mean it, and never treats it as a joke.
- Separately from the AI, the chat page itself watches your messages for the same signals and shows these resources above the message box, so they are there even if the persona misreads the moment.
The resources a persona and the chat page give are:
- 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline · Call or text 988 (United States), 24/7
- Crisis Text Line · Text HOME to 741741 (United States)
- Find a helpline · Helplines in other countries
- If you are in immediate danger, your local emergency number.
This is a protocol, not a promise. The AI can misjudge a message in either direction, and the keyword check on the chat page is deliberately simple. If something a persona said or did in a moment like this concerned you, please tell us, so we can make it better.
Representing other people
You can add the people in your life to your timeline, and even give them lightweight personas of their own. Please do so with care and respect for them. The most faithful re-enactments come from personas owned and built by the people they represent, then shared with you. See How it works for more on sharing.
How My Locket was built
My Locket’s code and other assets were written with the help of AI. People designed the product, decided how it should behave, and reviewed, tested, and approved every change before it shipped. The tools helped us build faster; the responsibility for what My Locket does, and for any mistakes it makes, is ours.
As things change
AI is changing quickly, and so may the models and providers behind My Locket. If how we use AI changes in a way that matters to you, we will update this statement.
